Day 5

Here's what I understand from Mom about what happened. There are 4 Boxers at the house, 2 boys, 2 girls. The two girls got into a fight in her kitchen, the older boy Percy started to go in the kitchen to get involved, mom told him not to go. When she told him no he turned on her. She protected her face and neck with her arms. In her own words, her right arm looked like minced meat.

The attack on her stopped when the other two dogs stopped fighting. Mom got her phone and went to her car. Blood apparently was on the walls, carpet, furniture, all the way out to her car. (She'll be receiving 2 units of blood today). She couldn't remember the Vonyage version of "911", it's a different number to dial and she couldn't remember what it was (If you have vonyage write the number on your phone). So she called H&R Block and asked her co-workers to call 911 for her and have an ambulance sent. She shut herself in her bedroom to make the call and then she made her way outside to her car. She sat in her car with her arms mangled until the ambulance arrived. She said they worked on her for a long time while still at the house in the ambulance. Then they took her to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

I don't have a lot of details of what happened after she arrived here because I didn't find out about the incident until Monday night, this happened Saturday. One of her co-workers felt the injuries were severe enough that they need to go against her wishes not to contact anyone until she knew how things were going go. So they tracked me down through the Mary Kay website so they could get some word out to the family.

She was sent from the emergency center to the surgical floor. All wounds were left open because they are dog bites and the surgeon needed to see them before anything could be done. I have personally talked to several of the staff that saw her before the surgery and they have all been consistent in saying it was the worst dog bites they have ever encountered. Even the doctor who did the surgery, who is apparently phenomenal, was shocked when he saw the wounds. Before surgery he said that his first goal was to save the right arm avoid amputation, second goal to save the use of the arm. He apparently has been able to accomplish much of both goals. I should get to talk to him today. The staff said in their opinion on a scale of 1 to 10 of severity this was a 9.

She will be having more surgery on Monday or Tuesday to close the right arm and remove the suction vac from the wound. She will likely go to rehabilitation some time next week. Her attitude is outstanding.

I'll add more when I know more.
